The Magic of Marie Kondo

Hello and welcome to Abode. Today in the spirit of Spring, we're talking about spring cleaning. But not just your standard dusting and polishing - we are dedicating our inspiration blog to someone who has become a true inspiration in the world of organisation and tidying up, Marie Kondo.

By now it's hard to have not heard about Marie Kondo, author of the bestselling 'The Life-Changing World of Tidying Up' (published in 2014). Her KonMari method has "sparked joy" for people all over the world. By encouraging people to feel re-acquainted with their belongings as well as take ownership of the volume of their possessions, Marie Kondo can help to instil organised and healthy habits for your home and your family as a whole.

Inspired by minimalism, there are five distinct "Categories" to cleaning the KonMari way. Dividing the tidying into categories rather than by location or room ensures that no matter how daunting your spring cleaning challenge is, "you will always finish".

  1. Clothes
  2. Books
  3. Papers
  4. Komono (e.g. Miscellaneous Items)
  5. Sentimental Items

And like anything involving organisation, there are also set rules to follow and below each rule, a little comment on why we think it's important.

  • Commit yourself to Tidying Up

(having focus and determination about tidying will help you to reach your goals faster)

  • Imagine your Ideal Lifestyle

(keeping your dream home and lifestyle in mind is essential for visualising your goals)

  • First, discard everything that doesn't 'spark joy' and make sure to thank each item sincerely before throwing it away

(at First 4 Blinds, we love this stage, as it shows gratitude for each possession)

  • Tidy by category, not location

(this step ensures that you keep a structure to your tidying rather than getting too distracted and overwhelmed)

  • Follow the right order of categories

(this order means that as you progress through the categories your sense of what 'sparks joy' heightens)

  • Ask yourself if it sparks joy

(this feeling can be hard to pinpoint at first, but Marie Kondo says it's the same feeling you get when holding a puppy!)

If you'd like to try the KonMari method but don't have time to buy her book, feel inspired after an afternoon on Netflix. Marie Kondo's new programme 'Tidying Up with Marie Kondo' brings all her inspiration, tips and methods right into your home.

We hope you've enjoyed our article today and are as excited for Spring as we are! If you'd like to get in touch with a member of our friendly team, please use https://www.first4blinds.com/contact-us/
