Abode’s looking inward with Ikigai

Hello and welcome to our latest Abode article. Today as part of our inspiration blog we would like to focus on a Japanese lifestyle practice known as Ikigai. It can be best translated into English as ‘a reason to jump out of bed in the morning’ or ‘finding your inner purpose’. At Abode and First 4 Blinds, we aim to create comfortable and beautiful homes that can evoke the feeling of being centred and present.

Ikigai as a practice is followed on the Japanese island of Okinawa, a place where people live longer than anywhere else in the whole world. People living on Okinawa live very healthy lifestyles thanks in part to the geographical location of the island; however, they also believe that achieving your life’s unique purpose is an essential requirement in living a long and happy life. Our favourite feature of Ikigai is that it encourages fulfilment on an individual basis, but it is just as focused on collective fulfilment through our social connections with each other.

To help you get started with living a more Ikigai life, Ken Mogi, a neuroscientist and author of ‘Awakening your Ikigai’, believes Ikigai centres around five pillars;

  • starting small
  • accepting yourself
  • connecting with the world around you
  • seeking out small joys
  • being in the here and now

Although the ‘five pillars’ might seem quite daunting tasks to try to accomplish, it is possible to frame these principles into four questions to help find your inner purpose every day;

  1. What do I love?
  2. What am I good at?
  3. What can I be paid for now?
  4. What does the world need?

We hope that you’ve enjoyed our article this week. As a mini-update following our article last week about our Muddy Stilettos Award nomination, we are exceptionally pleased to share that we have made it to the finals of the ‘Best Interior Store’ category! Thank you to everyone who has voted so far!

We’ll be back soon with our favourite May interior design trends, but until then if you would like any advice on decorating your home, we are more than happy to help. Please feel free to get in touch here; https://www.first4blinds.com/contact-us
